Help

There are three ways to find data on this site:

  • use the search box to search for data relating to your interests
  • use the Browse All Data link
  • use the data category links on the home page

Click on an individual dataset to see the data displayed on the map, for more details, and for download options.

Selecting a dataset will display a description along with the Data and API Explorer tabs. The location of the data will be displayed in the map window as well.

The map can be zoomed in and out using the + and – buttons in the top left of the map window; and panning can be achieved using a left click/hold and drag.

Features in the map display can be selected to receive further information about that feature. Note the map will only display up to 1,000 features at one time.

The three tabs available to use are:

  • Overview – This tab shows a description of the datasets and the fields which are included.
  • Data – This tab allows you to view the dataset in a spreadsheet format in the web browser.
You can select field name to sort or filter by.
  • API Explorer – This tab provides information for advanced users and developers.

To filter the dataset based on an attribute select the Data tab. Then select the filter icon on the field you want to filter on e.g. ASSET_DESCRIPTION. Then in the dropdown box above the data table, enter the filter options you want to use to initiate the filter.

The other option is the filter by Map View. To activate this, simply zoom the map into your area of interest. The data table will automatically exclude features outside the current map view as you zoom in.

Three download options are available using the ‘Download’ button.

  • Spreadsheet – This option will save your data as a csv file which can be opened in text editors, Excel,
    etc.
  • KML – This option will download the data for use in Google Earth or ArcGIS Earth. This will download
the data in the WGS84 projection.
  • Shapefile – This option will download the data in NZTM projection for use in specialised GIS software
    e.g. ArcGIS Desktop, QGIS, etc.

You can choose to download the full dataset or the filtered dataset if you have applied a filter using attributes or the map view.

Downloading large datasets (more than 1,000 features) may take some time.

It should also be noted that our large datasets may not work as KMLs, as there is a size limit.
